Naloxone is an opioid antagonist. It quickly reverses the effects of opioids, especially dangerous slowing of breathing.

What Naloxone Is Used For

  • Emergency treatment of opioid overdose
  • Reversing opioid effects after anaesthesia
  • Reversing breathing problems in newborns exposed to opioids

Common Side Effects

  • Sudden opioid withdrawal: sweating, shaking, vomiting
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Raised blood pressure
  • Agitation

Precautions

In an overdose, give naloxone if available and call for emergency help straight away. Its effect can wear off before the opioid's, so the person must be watched closely. In hospital it is given with heart and breathing monitoring.
