NYSTATIN

Nystatin is an antifungal that works on contact with yeast. It is barely absorbed from the gut, so it treats thrush where it touches, in the mouth, the intestine or on the skin, without spreading through the body.

What Nystatin Is Used For

• Oral thrush in infants and adults
• Thrush in the gut
• Fungal nappy rash and skin fold infection
• Preventing thrush in people at higher risk

Common Side Effects

• Nausea
• Loose motions with higher amounts
• Unpleasant taste of the suspension
• Local irritation with the cream

Precautions

For oral thrush, hold the suspension in the mouth and move it around before swallowing, and use it after feeds or meals so it stays in contact longer. In babies, dummies and bottle teats need sterilising, and a breastfeeding mother may need her nipples treated at the same time or the infection passes back and forth. Continue for two days after it looks clear. Recurrent oral thrush in an adult should be investigated.
