Octyl methoxycinnamate, also listed as octinoxate, is one of the most widely used chemical sunscreen filters. It absorbs UVB rays, the part of sunlight most responsible for sunburn, and converts that energy into a small amount of heat.

What Octyl Methoxycinnamate Is Used For

  • UVB protection in daily and beach sunscreens
  • Sun protection built into moisturisers and makeup
  • Reducing sunburn and light triggered pigmentation
  • Protecting skin during treatments that increase sun sensitivity

Common Side Effects

  • Stinging if it reaches the eyes
  • Skin irritation in sensitive skin
  • Contact allergy, uncommonly

Precautions

It filters UVB well, so look for a product that also names a UVA filter for full protection. Sunscreen only works in the amount and frequency it was tested at, which means applying generously and reapplying every two to three hours outdoors. Shade, a hat and covered sleeves do more than any bottle. For young infants, physical filters are usually preferred.
