Otilonium bromide is an antispasmodic that acts locally on the muscle of the gut wall. Very little is absorbed into the body, so it relieves cramping in the bowel with few effects elsewhere.

What Otilonium Bromide Is Used For

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Abdominal cramps and colicky pain
  • Bloating and urgency associated with IBS
  • Spasm during bowel investigations

Common Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth, uncommonly
  • Dizziness

Precautions

It is usually taken before meals, since that is when cramping is triggered. It eases symptoms rather than treating the cause, and diet, regular meals, fibre and stress all play a large part in IBS. Symptoms starting after the age of forty, weight loss, bleeding, night time pain, or a persistent change in bowel habit need investigation first.
