Paliperidone
Paliperidone is a second generation antipsychotic and the active form of risperidone. It comes as a slow release tablet and as a long acting injection given monthly or less often, which helps people who struggle with daily tablets.
What Paliperidone Is Used For
- Schizophrenia
- Schizoaffective disorder
- Maintenance treatment to prevent relapse
Common Side Effects
- Drowsiness and restlessness
- Stiffness or tremor
- Weight gain and raised blood sugar or cholesterol
- Raised prolactin, which can cause breast tenderness or period changes
Precautions
Weight, blood sugar and lipids are checked before starting and periodically after. The tablet shell may appear in the stool, which is normal and does not mean the medicine was missed. Do not stop treatment when you feel well, since relapse risk is highest then. Report severe stiffness with fever, uncontrolled movements or fainting straight away.
