Pheniramine maleate is an older antihistamine that blocks the histamine released during an allergic reaction. It works quickly, and because it crosses into the brain it also causes drowsiness, which is why it is often found in night time cold preparations.

Allergy symptoms in combination cold and flu products
Injectable forms are used in hospital for allergic reactions

Drowsiness
Dry mouth
Blurred vision
Dizziness

Precautions

Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol with it. Older adults are more sensitive to the drowsiness and confusion it can cause. Check the label of any cold remedy you take alongside, as many already contain an antihistamine and doubling up is easy to do by accident.
