Phloroglucinol

Phloroglucinol is an antispasmodic medicine. It relaxes smooth muscle in the gut, bile ducts, urinary tract and womb, which eases cramping pain.

What Phloroglucinol Is Used For

• Stomach and intestinal cramps
• Irritable bowel syndrome pain
• Biliary and renal colic pain
• Painful periods and uterine spasms
• Spasm-related pain during pregnancy, when advised by a doctor

Common Side Effects

• Skin rash or itching (uncommon)
• Low blood pressure with injection
• Mild stomach upset

Precautions

Phloroglucinol relieves spasm but does not treat the cause of the pain. Seek medical advice for severe, persistent or unexplained abdominal pain, fever or vomiting. Avoid combining it with strong painkillers such as morphine unless your doctor advises it.
