PODOPHYLLUM
Podophyllum resin is a plant extract that stops wart cells dividing, causing the wart tissue to break down. It is caustic and toxic if absorbed, so it is applied carefully and usually by a health professional.
What Podophyllum Is Used For
- Genital and anal warts
- Certain other viral warts, on medical advice
Common Side Effects
- Burning, pain and redness at the site
- Ulceration of the treated area
- Swelling of surrounding skin
Precautions
It must not be used in pregnancy or on large areas, on bleeding warts, or on the cervix or inside the vagina or anus. Surrounding healthy skin is protected before application and the medicine is washed off after the stated time, never left on longer. Genital warts should be diagnosed by a doctor, since not every lump is a wart, and partners may need checking too.
