Polygeline is a gelatin based solution infused into a vein to restore blood volume. It holds fluid inside the circulation, which supports blood pressure while blood or other treatment is arranged.

What Polygeline Is Used For

Restoring blood volume after significant blood loss
Shock from trauma, burns or sepsis
Support during surgery
Priming certain equipment such as dialysis circuits

Common Side Effects

Allergic reactions, including rash, wheeze and low blood pressure
Flushing
Fever or chills
Fluid overload if too much is given

Precautions

It is given only in hospital with monitoring, since allergic reactions to gelatin solutions can be severe and sudden. It replaces volume but not red cells, so it is a bridge rather than a substitute for blood when blood is what is needed. Care is taken in heart and kidney disease, where fluid overload is a risk.
