Drospirenone is a progestogen hormone similar to natural progesterone. In combined pills it is paired with ethinyl estradiol, and sometimes levomefolate (a folate).

What Drospirenone Is Used For

  • Prevention of pregnancy (oral contraception)
  • Moderate acne in women who also need contraception
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) symptoms
  • Folate support in women of childbearing age, in levomefolate-containing pills

Common Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headache
  • Breakthrough bleeding or spotting
  • Mood changes

Precautions

Combined pills can increase the risk of blood clots, especially in smokers over 35. Do not use it if you have had a blood clot, certain migraines, liver disease or kidney problems. Drospirenone can raise potassium, so tell your doctor about medicines that also raise potassium.
