About this product

Overview

Meteor 500mg Tablet contains Metformin, which belongs to the class of medications known as biguanides. It is primarily used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and high blood sugar levels. Metformin works by decreasing glucose production in the liver and improving insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, thereby lowering blood sugar levels and helping to control diabetes.

Uses

  • Meteor 500mg Tablet is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, either alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications, such as sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin.
  • It helps to improve glycemic control by reducing fasting and postprandial (after-meal) blood glucose levels, thus decreasing the risk of diabetes-related complications.

How It Works

  • Metformin exerts its pharmacological effects primarily by inhibiting hepatic gluconeogenesis (glucose production) and glycogenolysis (breakdown of glycogen into glucose).
  • It also enhances peripheral glucose uptake and utilization by muscle cells, thereby improving insulin sensitivity and glucose utilization in tissues.
  • Additionally, Metformin may reduce intestinal glucose absorption and increase the utilization of glucose by intestinal mucosal cells.

Dosage

  • The dosage of Meteor 500mg Tablet should be individualized based on the patient’s medical condition, response to treatment, renal function, and other factors.
  • It is typically taken orally with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea and diarrhea.
  • The starting dose of Metformin is usually 500mg to 1000mg once or twice daily, with gradual dose titration as needed to achieve glycemic control.
  • The maximum recommended daily dose of Metformin is 2000mg to 2500mg, depending on renal function.

Precautions

  • Meteor 500mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal function, as Metformin is primarily excreted by the kidneys, and accumulation of the drug may occur in patients with renal impairment.
  • It should be temporarily discontinued before undergoing radiological studies involving intravascular administration of iodinated contrast media to reduce the risk of contrast-induced nephropathy.
  • Metformin may cause lactic acidosis, a rare but potentially serious complication, particularly in patients with renal impairment, hepatic dysfunction, or conditions predisposing to tissue hypoxia.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Meteor 500mg Tablet may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and metallic taste. Less common but more serious side effects such as lactic acidosis, vitamin B12 deficiency, and hepatotoxicity may occur, albeit rarely.

When Not to Use

  • Meteor 500mg Tablet is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] <30 mL/min/1.73 m²) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis.
  • It should not be used in patients with acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), as Metformin may exacerbate acidosis.

Frequently asked questions

Can Meteor 500mg Tablet be used for weight loss?

Metformin is not approved for weight loss, but some studies suggest that it may help promote modest weight loss in individuals with type 2 diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing appetite. However, weight loss should not be the primary goal of Metformin therapy.

How long does it take for Meteor 500mg Tablet to lower blood sugar levels?

The onset of action of Metformin may vary among individuals, but significant reductions in fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels are typically observed within 1 to 2 weeks of starting treatment. Maximum therapeutic effects may take several weeks to months to achieve.

Is Meteor 500mg Tablet safe during pregnancy?

Metformin is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy, but it should be used with caution and under the supervision of a healthcare professional, particularly in women with gestational diabetes or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is important to weigh the potential benefits against the risks in each individual case.
