METFORMIN

Metformin is the usual first-choice medicine for type 2 diabetes. It lowers the amount of sugar the liver releases and helps the body respond better to its own insulin.

What Metformin Is Used For

• Type 2 diabetes in adults and children
• Insulin resistance
• Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), on a doctor’s advice

Common Side Effects

• Nausea, loose motions or stomach upset, usually in the first weeks
• Metallic taste in the mouth
• Reduced appetite

Precautions

Taking metformin with food, and starting at a low dose, makes the stomach side effects much easier to tolerate. Your doctor will check kidney function periodically. Metformin is usually stopped for a short period before scans that use contrast dye and before major surgery. Long-term use can lower vitamin B12.
