Dothiepin is the older name for the same medicine now called dosulepin. It is a tricyclic antidepressant that raises the level of serotonin and noradrenaline available in the brain, and it has a strongly sedating effect.

Precautions

Because dothiepin and dosulepin are the same medicine, take care that you are not prescribed both under different brand names. It is unsafe in overdose and affects heart rhythm, so it is kept securely and taken exactly as prescribed. Benefit for mood builds over several weeks, and it should never be stopped abruptly.
