Choline bitartrate is a supplement form of choline, a nutrient the body uses to build cell membranes, to move fat out of the liver, and to make acetylcholine, a messenger involved in memory and muscle control.

What Choline Bitartrate Is Taken For

  • Supporting liver fat metabolism
  • Memory and cognitive support formulations
  • Part of B complex and prenatal supplements
  • Choline intake in diets low in eggs and meat

Common Side Effects

  • A fishy body odour at higher amounts
  • Nausea
  • Loose motions
  • Sweating

Precautions

Most people get enough choline from food, eggs and liver being the richest sources, so supplements are not automatically needed. High amounts can cause low blood pressure and the fishy odour that people find distressing. If you are pregnant or on regular medication, check with a pharmacist before adding it. It is a supplement and not a treatment for liver disease.
