Cetirizine dihydrochloride is a second generation antihistamine. It blocks histamine to relieve allergy symptoms and causes far less drowsiness than older antihistamines, since only a small amount enters the brain.

Allergic rhinitis, with sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes
Hives and itchy skin
Dust, pollen and pet allergy
Itching from insect bites and eczema

Mild drowsiness in some people
Dry mouth
Headache
Tiredness

Precautions

Although it is described as non drowsy, a proportion of people do feel sleepy on it, so see how it affects you before driving, and avoid alcohol with it. Taking it in the evening suits many people. The dose is reduced in kidney disease. Sudden facial swelling, difficulty breathing or a whole body reaction is an emergency and needs immediate help, not a tablet.
