Desmopressin is a synthetic form of vasopressin, the body's antidiuretic hormone. It reduces the amount of urine the kidneys make.

What Desmopressin Is Used For

  • Central diabetes insipidus
  • Bedwetting in children (nocturnal enuresis)
  • Night-time urination (nocturia) in adults
  • Some bleeding disorders, such as mild haemophilia A and von Willebrand disease

Common Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Low sodium levels

Precautions

Limit fluid intake from one hour before until eight hours after a dose, as too much water can cause dangerously low sodium. Stop and seek help for headache with vomiting, confusion or seizures. Pause treatment during vomiting or diarrhoea.
