Glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) is a nitrate that widens blood vessels quickly to relieve or prevent the chest pain of angina. It comes as a spray, tablets and patches.

What Glyceryl Trinitrate Is Used For

  • Relieving a sudden angina attack
  • Preventing angina before exertion
  • Long-term angina management, in patch form

Common Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Flushing
  • Dizziness

Precautions

For a sudden attack, sit down before using the spray or tablet under the tongue, as it can make you dizzy. If chest pain does not ease after the doses your doctor advised, treat it as an emergency. Never combine nitrates with medicines for erectile dysfunction, as together they can dangerously drop blood pressure.
