Iron polysaccharide complex carries iron bound to a carbohydrate. That form tends to cause less stomach upset and constipation than traditional iron salts, which makes it easier to keep taking for the months treatment usually requires.

What Iron Polysaccharide Is Used For

  • Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Low iron stores in pregnancy and after delivery
  • Children who cannot tolerate ordinary iron syrups
  • Iron loss from heavy periods

Common Side Effects

  • Black stools, expected and harmless
  • Constipation or loose motions
  • Nausea
  • Metallic taste

Precautions

Keep it away from tea, milk, calcium tablets, antacids and thyroid medicine by at least two hours. Treatment usually continues about three months after the blood count normalises, to rebuild stores. Anaemia in an adult needs its cause identified, not just the level corrected. Store iron products well out of reach of children, since overdose is a serious emergency.
