LACTITOL MONOHYDRATE
Lactitol is a sugar alcohol that passes undigested into the large bowel, where it draws in water and is fermented by gut bacteria. That softens the stool, and the same fermentation traps ammonia, which is useful in liver disease.
What Lactitol Is Used For
- Constipation, including chronic constipation
- Hepatic encephalopathy, the confusion of advanced liver disease
- Keeping stools soft after anal surgery or with piles
Common Side Effects
- Gas and bloating, especially in the first days
- Abdominal cramps
- Loose motions if the amount is too high
Precautions
Take it with plenty of water, and expect one to two days before it works. Bloating usually settles as the gut adjusts. Constipation that persists, or comes with weight loss, bleeding or a change in bowel habit, needs a doctor rather than long term laxatives. In liver disease the amount is adjusted to the number of stools per day, as directed by the specialist.
