Piroctone olamine, known by the trade name Octopirox, is an antifungal used in shampoos. It reduces the yeast on the scalp that drives dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, and it is gentler than some older anti dandruff agents.

What Piroctone Olamine Is Used For

  • Dandruff and flaking scalp
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp
  • Itchy, oily scalp
  • Maintenance treatment to prevent dandruff returning

Common Side Effects

  • Scalp dryness
  • Irritation or itching
  • Change in hair feel or texture

Precautions

Leave the shampoo on the scalp for three to five minutes before rinsing, since contact time is what makes it work. Dandruff is controlled rather than cured, so most people need to keep using it once or twice a week. Keep it out of the eyes. A scalp that is very red, weeping, painful or losing hair should be seen by a doctor.
