Apixaban is a blood thinner (anticoagulant) that helps prevent harmful blood clots. It is taken by mouth and does not usually need regular blood-clotting tests.

What Apixaban Is Used For

Preventing stroke in atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat)
Treating and preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and lung clots
Preventing clots after some hip and knee surgery

Common Side Effects

Easier bruising
Nosebleeds or bleeding gums
Longer bleeding from cuts

Precautions

The main risk with any blood thinner is bleeding. Tell your doctor about black stools, blood in urine, or bleeding that will not stop, and mention apixaban before any surgery or dental work. Do not stop it on your own, as this raises the risk of a clot.
