Xalacom 2.5ml Eye Drops

Xalacom 2.5ml Eye Drops is a combination medication containing two active ingredients: Latanoprost & Timolol. It is used to treat glaucoma and ocular hypertension by reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) within the eye.

Active Ingredients:

1. Latanoprost: It belongs to a class of medications called prostaglandin analogs. Latanoprost works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor (the fluid inside the eye), thereby reducing intraocular pressure.
2. Timolol: This is a beta-blocker medication. Timolol reduces the production of aqueous humor, further helping to lower intraocular pressure.

Uses:

Xalacom 2.5ml Eye Drops are prescribed for the treatment of:

• Glaucoma: A group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to elevated intraocular pressure.
• Ocular Hypertension: Elevated pressure within the eye, which can lead to glaucoma if left untreated.

Mechanism of Action:

• Latanoprost: Increases the outflow of aqueous humor by mimicking the action of prostaglandins, thereby reducing intraocular pressure.
• Timolol: Reduces the production of aqueous humor by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors in the ciliary body, which decreases the formation of intraocular pressure.

Administration:

Administer Xalacom 2.5ml Eye Drops as directed by your ophthalmologist. Typically, one drop is instilled into the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening. Before using the eye drops, wash your hands and tilt your head back. Pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket and instill the prescribed number of drops. Avoid touching the dropper tip to prevent contamination.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of Xalacom 2.5ml Eye Drops may include ocular irritation, eye redness, blurred vision, eye itching, and eye pain. Some patients may experience systemic side effects due to timolol, such as decreased heart rate, low blood pressure, or respiratory issues. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, notify your healthcare provider promptly.

Precautions:

• Inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially respiratory disorders, heart conditions, or diabetes.
• Advise your doctor of any medications you are currently taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal supplements, to avoid potential drug interactions.
• Use caution while driving or operating machinery, as Xalacom may cause blurred vision or other visual disturbances.

When Not to Use:

Xalacom 2.5ml Eye Drops are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to any of the ingredients in the formulation. It is not recommended for use in patients with certain eye conditions, such as acute angle-closure glaucoma.
