Description
Neupanto 40mg Tablet contains the active ingredient pantoprazole, which belongs to the class of medications known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It is primarily prescribed for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and other conditions characterized by excessive gastric acid production.
Active Ingredient:
- Pantoprazole: Pantoprazole works by irreversibly inhibiting the proton pump in the gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing the secretion of gastric acid. This leads to a decrease in gastric acidity and helps alleviate symptoms associated with acid-related disorders.
Uses:
Neupanto 40mg Tablet is used for the following purposes:
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): It is indicated for the short-term treatment and maintenance therapy of GERD, a condition characterized by the backward flow of stomach acid into the esophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn and acid regurgitation.
- Peptic Ulcers: Pantoprazole may be prescribed for the healing and prevention of peptic ulcers (both gastric and duodenal ulcers) associated with Helicobacter pylori infection or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use.
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: It is also used in the management of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by the overproduction of gastric acid and the formation of multiple peptic ulcers in the stomach and duodenum.
Mechanism of Action:
Pantoprazole exerts its pharmacological effects by selectively inhibiting the hydrogen-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) enzyme system (proton pump) located on the secretory surface of parietal cells in the stomach. By blocking this enzyme, pantoprazole suppresses the final step in gastric acid secretion, resulting in a decrease in acid production.
Administration:
Neupanto 40mg Tablet is typically taken orally, once daily, preferably in the morning before breakfast or as directed by a healthcare professional. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and should not be chewed, crushed, or split. The duration of treatment may vary depending on the underlying condition being treated.
Side Effects:
Common side effects associated with pantoprazole may include:
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Flatulence
- Dizziness
- Rash
- Fatigue
Precautions:
- Pantoprazole should be used with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment or a history of hypersensitivity reactions to other proton pump inhibitors.
- Long-term use of pantoprazole may be associated with an increased risk of certain adverse events, including osteoporosis-related fractures and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
- Patients should be monitored regularly for changes in kidney function and electrolyte levels during prolonged treatment with pantoprazole.
Contraindications:
- Neupanto 40mg Tablet is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to pantoprazole or any component of the formulation.
- It should not be used concomitantly with drugs that are known to interact with pantoprazole, such as atazanavir, nelfinavir, and rilpivirine.
