Acyclovir 500 mg injection iv is used for:

  • Severe chickenpox or shingles, especially with weakened immunity
  • Herpes infection in newborns

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Acyclovir 500 mg injection iv can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Common ones include:

  • Pain or inflammation at the drip site
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Rise in kidney blood tests

Precautions

Good hydration is important during treatment, because acyclovir can crystallise in the kidneys if fluid intake is low, and the dose is adjusted for kidney function. It is given slowly as an infusion by trained staff. Antivirals work best when started early, so unusual headache, confusion or a rash with severe pain should be assessed quickly.
