Desferal 500mg injection contains Desferrioxamine (500mg). It comes as an injection. The pack contains 10 amp injection.

Desferrioxamine binds excess iron in the body so that it can be removed in the urine.

Uses of Desferal 500mg injection

Desferal 500mg injection is used for:

  • Iron overload from repeated blood transfusions, such as in thalassaemia
  • Acute iron poisoning, in hospital

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Desferal 500mg injection can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Common ones include:

  • Pain or swelling where it is given
  • Changes in hearing or vision with long use
  • Red-brown urine

Precautions

Regular eye and hearing checks are needed with long-term use. It is given under medical supervision.
