Overview

Losanta 25mg Tablet contains Losartan Potassium, which belongs to the class of medications known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It is used for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) and to reduce the risk of stroke and cardiovascular events in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy.

Uses

  • Losanta 25mg Tablet is indicated for the management of hypertension, a chronic medical condition characterized by persistently elevated blood pressure levels.
  • It may also be prescribed to delay the progression of kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension, particularly those with proteinuria (excessive protein in the urine).
  • Additionally, Losartan Potassium may be used for the treatment of heart failure in patients who are intolerant to angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.

How It Works

  • Losartan Potassium, the active ingredient in Losanta 25mg Tablet, selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to its receptors, thereby preventing its vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-releasing effects.
  • By inhibiting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), Losartan causes vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) and reduces blood pressure, leading to improved cardiovascular outcomes and decreased morbidity and mortality.

Dosage

  • The dosage of Losanta 25mg Tablet should be individualized based on the patient’s blood pressure response and tolerability.
  • It is usually taken orally once daily, with or without food, as directed by the prescribing physician.
  • The initial dose of Losartan Potassium for the treatment of hypertension is typically 25mg to 50mg once daily, which may be titrated upward to a maximum dose of 100mg daily, if necessary.

Precautions

  • Losanta 25mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal function, as Losartan and its active metabolite are primarily excreted by the kidneys.
  • It is contraindicated in pregnant women, particularly in the second and third trimesters, due to the potential risk of fetal harm or death.
  • Losartan Potassium may cause hyperkalemia (elevated potassium levels), particularly in patients with renal impairment or those receiving potassium-sparing diuretics or supplements.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Losanta 25mg Tablet may include dizziness, fatigue, hypotension (low blood pressure), hyperkalemia, and upper respiratory tract infections. Less common but more serious side effects such as angioedema, renal impairment, and hepatotoxicity may occur, albeit rarely.

When Not to Use

  • Losanta 25mg Tablet is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to Losartan Potassium or any components of the formulation.
  • It should not be used concomitantly with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or renal impairment, as this combination may increase the risk of renal dysfunction, hyperkalemia, and hypotension.
