About this product

Overview

SENSOCAIN SPINAL INJECTION 0.75% contains Bupivacaine Hydrochloride as its active ingredient. It is a local anesthetic medication used for spinal anesthesia. Bupivacaine belongs to the class of medications known as amide-type local anesthetics. This injection is specifically formulated for spinal (intrathecal) administration to provide anesthesia for surgical procedures and pain relief during labor and delivery.

Uses

SENSOCAIN SPINAL INJECTION 0.75% is indicated for:

  1. Spinal Anesthesia: It is used to induce anesthesia for surgical procedures below the level of the umbilicus, including cesarean section, lower limb surgeries, and urological procedures.
  2. Labor and Delivery: It may be used for pain relief during labor and delivery, providing anesthesia to the lower body while allowing the patient to remain conscious.

Mechanism of Action

Bupivacaine Hydrochloride exerts its pharmacological effects by reversibly blocking nerve conduction, thereby producing local anesthesia. It acts by inhibiting the influx of sodium ions through voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cell membranes, leading to the blockade of nerve impulse transmission. This results in the loss of sensation in the affected area.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage of SENSOCAIN SPINAL INJECTION 0.75% is determined based on factors such as the patient’s weight, age, and the intended surgical procedure. It is administered via lumbar puncture (spinal injection) under aseptic conditions by a qualified healthcare professional. The dosage may vary depending on the extent and duration of anesthesia required.

Precautions

  1. Hypotension: SENSOCAIN SPINAL INJECTION 0.75% may cause hypotension (low blood pressure), especially when administered rapidly or in high doses. Close monitoring of blood pressure and hemodynamic parameters is necessary during and after administration.
  2. Respiratory Depression: Inadvertent intravascular injection of bupivacaine may lead to systemic toxicity, including central nervous system depression and respiratory depression. Careful aspiration prior to injection and incremental dosing techniques are recommended to minimize the risk.
  3. Neurotoxicity: Prolonged or high-dose administration of local anesthetics like bupivacaine may result in neurotoxicity, manifesting as nerve damage or persistent neurologic deficits. The lowest effective dose should be used to reduce the risk of neurotoxic effects.
  4. Allergic Reactions: Patients with a known hypersensitivity to amide-type local anesthetics should avoid the use of SENSOCAIN SPINAL INJECTION 0.75%. Allergic reactions, although rare, may occur and require immediate medical attention.

Side Effects

Common side effects associated with SENSOCAIN SPINAL INJECTION 0.75% may include hypotension, bradycardia, nausea, vomiting, headache, backache, and transient neurological symptoms such as numbness or tingling in the lower extremities. Serious adverse effects such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and seizures are rare but may occur.
