Uses

  1. Bacterial Infections: Traxon IM Injection is indicated for the treatment of numerous bacterial infections, including:
    • Respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis.
    • Skin and soft tissue infections such as cellulitis and abscesses.
    • Urinary tract infections including cystitis and pyelonephritis.
    • Intra-abdominal infections such as peritonitis and cholecystitis.
    • Sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea.
    • Meningitis and other central nervous system infections.
    • Septicemia and bacteremia.

Mechanism of Action

Ceftriaxone exerts its antibacterial effects by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It achieves this by binding to and inhibiting the activity of enzymes involved in cell wall synthesis, known as penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). By disrupting cell wall formation, ceftriaxone ultimately leads to bacterial cell death.

Dosage and Administration

  • It is administered via intramuscular injection into a large muscle, such as the buttock or thigh.

When Not to Use

  • Neonates with hyperbilirubinemia, particularly those receiving phototherapy, as ceftriaxone may displace bilirubin from albumin and lead to kernicterus.
