Overview
Primox 40mg/200mg suspension is a combination medicine that contains Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole. It comes as a suspension. The pack contains 50ml suspension.
Co-trimoxazole combines two antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, that block two different steps bacteria need to make folic acid.
Uses of Primox 40mg/200mg suspension
Primox 40mg/200mg suspension is used for:
- Urinary tract infections
- Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), for treatment and prevention
- Some chest and gut infections
- Toxoplasmosis
Side Effects
Like all medicines, Primox 40mg/200mg suspension can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Common ones include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Skin rash or itching
Tell your doctor if a side effect is severe or does not go away, and get urgent help for signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, wheezing or a widespread rash.
Precautions
Do not take it if you are allergic to sulfa medicines. Stop it and get medical help at once if you develop a rash, blisters, mouth ulcers, sore throat or fever. Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, a blood disorder, G6PD deficiency or are pregnant. Drink plenty of fluids. It is not given to babies under 6 weeks old.
Tell your doctor about any other medicines or supplements you take, any allergies, and if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
How to Use
Use Primox 40mg/200mg suspension exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. Shake the bottle well if the label says so, and measure each dose with the cup or spoon that comes with the pack, not a kitchen spoon. Read the leaflet inside the pack before you start.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, as directed on the pack. Keep out of the reach of children and do not use after the expiry date.
