Overview

Visudyne 15mg Injection contains the active ingredient verteporfin, which is a photosensitizing agent used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of certain eye conditions. It is a sterile lyophilized powder that is reconstituted with sterile water for injection prior to administration.

Active Ingredient

  • Verteporfin: Verteporfin is a photosensitizer that is activated by light of a specific wavelength. When activated by laser light of the appropriate wavelength, verteporfin produces reactive oxygen species that selectively damage abnormal blood vessels in the eye, leading to their closure and regression.

Mechanism of Action

Verteporfin works by selectively accumulating in abnormal blood vessels, such as those found in choroidal neovascularization (CNV) associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or pathologic myopia. When activated by laser light of a specific wavelength, verteporfin produces reactive oxygen species that cause localized thrombosis and occlusion of the abnormal blood vessels, thereby reducing the leakage and growth of new vessels in the retina.

Uses

Visudyne 15mg Injection is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Pathologic myopia

Dosage and Administration

Visudyne 15mg Injection is administered intravenously over a period of 10 minutes at a dose of 6 mg/m^2 of body surface area. The injection is followed by activation of the drug with nonthermal red light of 689 nm wavelength delivered to the affected eye using a laser system. The duration and frequency of treatment sessions may vary depending on the individual patient’s response and the severity of the condition.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Visudyne 15mg Injection may include:

  • Transient visual disturbances (e.g., blurred vision, altered color perception)
  • Injection site reactions (e.g., pain, swelling, redness)
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., rash, itching, hives)
  • Photosensitivity reactions (e.g., sunburn, skin blistering)
  • Increased intraocular pressure

Precautions

  • Patients should avoid exposure to sunlight or bright indoor light for 5 days after receiving Visudyne treatment to minimize the risk of photosensitivity reactions.
  • Visudyne may cause transient visual disturbances, so patients should avoid driving or operating machinery until their vision returns to normal.
  • The safety and efficacy of Visudyne in pediatric patients have not been established.
  • Visudyne should be used with caution in patients with porphyria or hepatic impairment, as verteporfin may exacerbate these conditions.
