Overview

Ertuvia-M 2.5/1000mg Tablet is a combination medication containing two active ingredients: Empagliflozin & Metformin. Empagliflozin belongs to the class of medications called sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, while Metformin is a biguanide antidiabetic agent. This combination is used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus to help control blood sugar levels. Empagliflozin works by inhibiting the reabsorption of glucose by the kidneys, leading to increased glucose excretion in the urine. Metformin helps to reduce glucose production in the liver and improve insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues.

Uses

  1. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Ertuvia-M 2.5/1000mg Tablet is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It helps to improve glycemic control by lowering blood sugar levels through different mechanisms of action. This medication is typically used as an adjunct to diet and exercise in patients whose blood sugar levels are inadequately controlled with either Empagliflozin or Metformin alone.

Side Effects

While Ertuvia-M 2.5/1000mg Tablet is generally well-tolerated, it may cause side effects in some individuals. Common side effects associated with Empagliflozin and Metformin combination therapy include:

  • Genitourinary Infections: Increased risk of urinary tract infections and genital yeast infections may occur due to the mechanism of action of Empagliflozin. Patients should maintain good genital hygiene and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.
  • Hypoglycemia: Low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) may occur, particularly when Ertuvia-M 2.5/1000mg Tablet is used in combination with other antidiabetic medications or insulin. Patients should be educated about the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and instructed on appropriate management.
  • Gastrointestinal Disturbances: Common gastrointestinal side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. These symptoms are usually mild and transient, but patients should inform their healthcare provider if they persist or worsen.

Precautions

  • Renal Function: Ertuvia-M 2.5/1000mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal function, as both Empagliflozin and Metformin are excreted by the kidneys. Renal function should be assessed before starting treatment and regularly thereafter.
  • Hepatic Function: Patients with liver impairment should use Ertuvia-M 2.5/1000mg Tablet with caution, as Metformin is contraindicated in severe liver disease. Liver function tests should be monitored periodically.
  • Hypotension: Empagliflozin may cause a decrease in blood pressure, particularly in patients with a history of hypotension or dehydration. Blood pressure should be monitored regularly during treatment.
  • Lactic Acidosis: Metformin can rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, which is characterized by elevated lactate levels in the blood. Patients should be educated about the symptoms of lactic acidosis, such as muscle pain, respiratory distress, and abdominal discomfort, and instructed to seek immediate medical attention if they occur.
